Solar Bond III
Our Solar Bond III (Aug–Oct 2024) raised a total of £3.3 million towards the installation of solar PV on tenanted homes in Barnsley.
The 1,000 Solar Homes project, a significant step towards a sustainable future for the community, will fund the installation of solar panels on 1,000 council homes across Barnsley, bringing clean, renewable energy to the community.
The project will install solar PV on East and West facing roofs as there is a higher solar self consumption rate of the generation, less export to the local grid, providing more ‘balance’ for the local grid.
The project outcome by bringing more solar energy to Barnsley residents include:

The 2 year bond offers a projected 6% return per annum, with an expectation that bondholders will roll over their investment into a new 5 year bond
Why invest?
For a community in need
Barnsley was once a powerhouse in Britain’s coal mining industry but now has over 19,642 households living in fuel poverty. We know from past solar bond projects that this model – in which community investors fund solar panel installation onto council housing – is a surefire way to reduce energy costs for those who need those savings the most.

Those energy costs hit the most vulnerable. In addition to having large levels of fuel poverty, Barnsley also measures poorly against neighbouring local authorities for income deprivation, health deprivation, and disability.
With 47% more excess winter deaths than England’s average, your bond could help improve lives.

Profits generated through Smart Export Guarantee, a tariff scheme for solar power returned to the grid, will be shared with the community through our Solar Community Fund.
This fund has already given £121k to causes such as Age UK Energy Advice Clinics, Gateway Church Feast to Famine Cooking classes, and Ad Astra Community Centre’s facilities maintenance.
Help the wider community when you invest.
To further “The Just Transition”
Barriers to adopting green energy mean that council housing residents are the least likely to benefit from Net Zero initiatives and policies. Energy-saving and clean energy generation technology installation usually requires substantial financial investment and property ownership.
Our partnership with Bernslai Homes means that we’re able to help tenants access renewable energy for the third time. Previous project beneficiaries have experienced the following:
30%
Average reduction in home electricity bills
£19m
Collective savings for the community
£300K
Further savings through smart battery installations for 150 households
Our evidence and your backing will help encourage other local authorities and housing associations through similar schemes – leading to a wider spread of renewable energy for all.
